Lead miner returns after 200 years.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first visitors being allowed into the Great
Rutland cavern come and meet a Lead miner. On Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday
May 30th -31st, re-enactor Richard Taylor, in clothes of the period, will talk to visitors about
the life and times of a lead miner in the 18th C.
200 years ago in 1810 visitors were taken on guided tours by the then redundant miners.Using only candles to find their way these visitors were the forefront of tourism for Matlock
Bath. From these early visitors the area took off as a fashionable place to visit, with the
introduction of the rail links to cities and thousands descended on the village. The lead
miners had found a new way to make a living.
Richard Taylor, a resident of the Peak District, has been playing the part of historiccharacters for 10 years. He commented ‘ T'Owd Man the Derbyshire Lead miner is an ideal
way to bring to life the history of the 2 Great Caverns here at The Heights of Abraham.'
