Day Time Cavern Guide/ Visitor Experience Assistant

About the Job

This is a role within a team at one of Derbyshire's leading tourist attractions.  Cave Guides/VEAs deliver regular tours of our two show caves at The Heights of Abraham and are always on hand to provide first class standards of visitor engagement.

Telling subterranean stories is only one part of the role.  Guides are also responsible for immaculate standards of presentation across the estate and are key in ensuring visitor safety, above and below ground.

Whilst we encourage guides to adopt their own presentation style, they work to clear guidelines in terms of delivering factually accurate, relevant and engaging tour content.  Cave Guides also assist with sales/retail operations across site when needed.

Duties include:

Conducting enjoyable and informative cave tours to a daily schedule.

Ensuring the site is tidy and safe prior to opening and throughout the day

Assist in the running of a ticketing point/retail outlet adjacent to one of the caves and across the estate where needed.

About you:

You’ll be a friendly, outgoing and enthusiastic team player who enjoys engaging with a wide variety of visitors.  You’ll be educated to GCSE level or above with fantastic communication skills.  We attract a diverse range of visitors, so you’ll have the ability to tailor your style according to your audience.

You’ll have experience in working in an environment where the customer always comes first.  An interest in local history or geology is desirable but not essential, as full training will be given.

Due to the terrain at The Heights, above and below ground, you’ll be reasonably fit and mobile. You’ll feel at ease working underground.

Our cave tours run like clockwork, so you’ll have good time management skills and will be able to adapt your tour times according to our operational needs. You’ll have an eye for great attention to detail, safety and cleanliness.

If needed, you won’t be afraid to get stuck in and help other visitor-facing departments across the site.

Contract Dates:

9th February to 3rd November 2019

Cave Guides work a variety of daytime shifts, so you’ll have a flexible attitude to working arrangements and times.  As a tourist attraction, we’re busiest at weekends, school and bank holidays, so you’ll be expected to work your share of peak times.

Opportunities to earn above the national living wage.
