Since 1780 the enclosure of 30 acres on Masson Hill led to the development of what was then called a ‘Savage Garden’. This was a reflection of the age when Shelley, Wordsworth and other great names promoted the wonderment of nature and the beauty of the environment. Early visitors to the developing Spa Town of Matlock Bath were encouraged to walk up the hill and enjoy the woodlands. New pathways were carved in to the hillside on circuitous routes and eventually the Victorians built the Prospect Tower. All were designed in such a way as to open up the spectacular views over the Derwent Valley below and the surrounding splendour of the Peak District.
Today visitors can still enjoy these beautiful walks as part of their day out at The Heights. Pathways lead from the Summit through and past High Falls, up to the very top of Masson Hill, back by the Amphitheatre and on to the Prospect Tower.
Having taken in these spectacular views meander down the hill to the Tavern where you can sit and enjoy the panoramic views of the village of Matlock Bath below. Return steadily to the top past the Summer House or up the steps back to the Treetops Visitor Centre for a refreshing cup of tea and some shopping.
As you stroll through the woodlands remember these paths have been walked for over 200 years and many of the trees are older still. Of course woodland management does mean we sometimes have to fell very old or unstable specimens but these are always replaced to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy the magical woodland environment and, the resident birds and animals have an ideal habitat.
